Parking Update

I believe we are still going to have an area along 67 in front of Mt Woodson where we will be able to park. This is the area along southbound 67 (the Mt Woodson side) south of Hedy Drive, near the residential Mt Woodson Road.

For more information, please see the latest San Diego County Parks and Recreation website on the Mt Woodson Gateway Preserve, specifically the Aerial Map of Existing and Planned “No Parking”, noting the area not marked in red along southbound 67 near the Mt Woodson road. Also, the recent Ramona Sentinel (January 15, 2026) has a nice article on the new Mt Woodson parking lot which mentions what I believe is this area not marked in red. The article has a quote that begins “However, there is still a segment that will allow people to still park on the SR-67 …”

The good news is that it appears there will still be some parking along 67 that can be used to access the Mt Woodson trail, just not as much as there is today.

Meeting with Andrew Hayes

On Thursday, October 2, a few of us met with Andrew Hayes who works in Joel Anderson’s office on the county board of supervisors for our district. We reviewed the problem with restricted hours of parking, the fact that there is to be no other parking provided with access to the Mt Woodson trail, and the number of people who access the trail either early in the morning or late in the evening outside the planned hours for the Gateway Preserve parking lot. We also shared a few ideas for mitigating what we believe to be some of the County’s concerns about simply allowing 24/7 access to the parking lot. We also shared some map information from SANDAG, Google maps, as well as from Parks & Recreation, which all show the new parking area’s relationship to the Mt Woodson trail and the SR67 highway, so he got a good feel for the overall layout. (He has actually hiked Mt Woodson before, but it has been many years.)

Andrew Hayes seemed very receptive. He stated back to us that he understood that we are only asking for access; we were not complaining about having to pay for parking or any other issue. We just want access to the Mt Woodson trail.

He stated that he would set up a meeting with the County Parks and Recreation department to discuss this issue, and he would get back with us on how that went, and possible next steps.

This is just one more step in perhaps a long process to try to resolve this parking issue, but we all felt it was a positive step.

Many thanks for your ongoing support and interest,
– David
